Study Overview

In Fiscal Year 2012, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) initiated a coastal flood risk study for the West Florida Study Area that affects Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, and Pinellas Counties. The results of that study will be incorporated into updated digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and Flood Insurance Study (FIS) reports for these counties.

Once prepared, the Preliminary versions of the FIRMs and FIS reports are posted to the FEMA Flood Map Service Center website.  The current, effective FIRMs and FIS reports already are accessible through the Flood Map Service Center website.

The graphic below indicates how far in the coastal flood risk study process this study has progressed and provides an overview of the various phases of the study.  The boxes below the circles indicate the production tasks, coordination activities, and regulatory steps required for adopting an updated FIRM. Additional information on the regulatory process is provided in FEMA 495, Adoption of FIRMs by Participating Communities.

The engineering phase of the flood risk study is proceeding as planned and as discussed during the most recent set of technical outreach meetings, called Flood Risk Review Meetings, held on December 12-14, 2017, with community Floodplain Administrators and other local officials.  FEMA provided the the counties and affected incorporated communities with a 30-day period to review and provide comments on the draft work maps presented during the meetings.

Once the 30-day review period has elapsed and county or community comments have been addressed, FEMA will continue the map production process by developing and issuing Preliminary copies of the FIRMs and FIS reports for review by local officials and the public.

A "Coastal Flood Risk Study Meetings" Fact Sheet explaining previous and planned future meetings and public open houses, as well as copies of the presentations delivered at the Flood Risk Review Meetings and other previous meetings, are accessible through the "Project Documents" section below.
