Study Overview

In Fiscal Year 2013, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) initiated a coastal flood risk study for the Southwest Florida Study Area that affects Charlotte, Collier, Desoto, Hendry, Lee, and Sarasota Counties. The results of that study will be incorporated into updated digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and Flood Insurance Study (FIS) reports for these counties.

Once prepared, the Preliminary versions of the FIRMs and FIS reports will be posted to the FEMA Flood Map Service Center website. The current, effective FIRMs and FIS reports already are accessible through the Flood Map Service Center website.

Schedule

The graphic below indicates how far in the coastal flood risk study process this study has progressed and provides an overview of the various phases of the study.  The boxes below the circles indicate the production tasks, coordination activities, and regulatory steps required for adopting an updated FIRM.  Additional information on the regulatory process is provided in FEMA 495, Adoption of FIRMs by Participating Communities.

As shown in the graphic below, the coastal flood risk study for the Southwest Florida Study Area has completed the Stillwater Level Modeling phase of the process. The flood risk study is proceeding as discussed with community Floodplain Administrators, or FPAs, and other technical stakeholders during a series of technical outreach meetings, called Storm Surge Analysis Update Meetings, held on March 6, 2018, for Collier County and for Hendry and Lee Counties and on March 7, 2018, for Charlotte and  DeSoto Counties and for Sarasota County.

Project-related resources, including a Fact Sheet explaining study-related technical outreach meetings and public open houses and copies of the presentations delivered at the technical outreach meetings discussed above, are accessible through the "Project Documents" section below.

The next milestone in the flood risk study process will be another set of technical outreach meetings, called Flood Risk Review Meetings, which the project team will schedule with community FPAs and other technical stakeholders at a later date.
